Lt Col Dale Zelko, USAF, (Ret), pictured holding the original painting on the right, is the actual pilot of VEGA 31. SSgt Matt Scales of the AF Historical Research Office, a friend and colleague of Dale's, is behind the piece - he commissioned it and made this all happen. I'm the toad on the left. We "ambushed" Dale at the scenic Hanscom AFB BX food court on 22 January, 2010 to present it to him. He had no idea I'd be there as Matt had set up a sham meeting between he and Dale to talk about historical issues related to the VEGA 31 event. Needless to say, he was a bit surprised to see me, an old A-10 squadron mate, after 20 years bearing an original painting of him in combat! I was happy that he was very pleased with it, especially as he related that he is an avid collector of all types of art and a self styled art critic to boot!! Upon viewing the painting he said I passed his crit pretty well and that was very gratifying.
Lt Col Zelko's F-117 was shot down eggressing off target from a successful attack on a high value target by a modified SA-3 SAM on the fourth night of the 1999 NATO air campaign against Serbia - Operation Allied Force. Dale did an outstanding job of evading Serbian patrols and was instrumental in helping to effect his own rescue some 8 hours later by a massive and daring USAF/Allied Combat SAR effort that plucked him away from the bad guys in the dead of night and lousy weather to boot. Here's to the Sandys, Jolly Greens and PJs and everyone else behind the scenes that made it happen!!

Commander Jeffrey “Caesar” Czerewko, skipper of the VFA-146 “Blue Diamonds”, pulls off from a strafing pass on enemy vehicles near Now Zad, Afghanistan as part of continuing combat action during Operation Enduring Freedom. Having previously destroyed other Taliban positions in this mountain village with Mk 82 500 pound bomb runs, “Caesar” and his wingman have had to “get close to their work” and resort to strafing runs with their F/A-18C Hornet’s 20mm Vulcan cannon. Echoing the words of President George W. Bush, due to the efforts of “Caesar” and the Blue Diamonds, the Taliban is on the run and their unwelcome stay in this once peaceful village is now finished.

I am proud to present my first ever historical re-creation of a particular engagement. The 6 March 1972 North Vietnamese MiG-17 kill by VF-111 pilot Lt Garry "Greyhound" Weigand and RIO Lt (Jg) Bill "Farkle" Freckleton, the victorious crew of  Sundowner F-4B "Old Nick 201". The painting was completed only after extensive correspondence from the MiG killers themselves to depict a moment in time over the skies of North Vietnam. You'll notice the F-4's chaff door open, which I would not have depicted without the late breaking e-mail info from "Farkle." Prior to that I didn't know Navy F-4Bs carried internal chaff!!

It's been some time in coming, but I've added the first piece of military art, an "Old Guard" Grenadier of Napoleon's famed Imperial Guard that I call "The Smiling Grenadier". The likeness is modified from the original painting created by French military artist Edouard Detaille to honor a friend and colleague of mine, Chief Master Sergeant John Silva. The Chief is retiring from the Air National Guard on 7 March 2009 after a long and distinguished career. Like the Guardsman in the painting, he is a true warrior. Congrats on your retirement Chief - well deserved and about time!
